About Thunder Communications

The Early Years

I have been designing websites since 1996 in the days when web design was strictly gray pages with black text without much in the way of graphics. My first Thunder Communications website was created in 1998 — when we thought of websites more as a technology tool than a communication tool.

For many years, I coded sites in HTML. Now I am designing custom WordPress websites. My focus is how to leverage a website to maximize your exposure and communication needs.

I now specialize in non profits and artists, with a smattering of dot.com businesses along the way.

Sometimes artists find the business side to be more challenging than the art side. But it’s important to be able to promote yourself and your work through your website and your social media. Connecting to others through technology is critical.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between hosting and a domain name?

This is the source of one of the most common mixups. You need two things to start your website: your domain name and hosting. The domain name is the address or URL of your site. The hosting is where the files reside.

Do I buy the hosting and the website from the same place?

You can, but you don’t have to. For many, it makes it simpler to have that located with the same company.

Should I buy multiple domain names?

Domain names aren’t expensive, though you pay for them on an annual basis. It’s fine to purchase similar names if you think it’ll direct more clients to your website and reduce confusion along the way.

What’s the difference between .com and .org? And all the rest?

Generally, it’s a good idea to use a .com if you are selling goods and stay away from a .org. Leave those to the non profits. But there are way more options now for the extensions, and you are advised to take some time to think about what makes the most sense for you.

Once I get my WordPress site, how will I know what to do?

I will train you on how to maintain your own website. You can always check back in for additional assistance or pay on an hourly basis for changes/updates to be done for you.

Does this mean I use WordPress.com?

No, you’ll avoid WordPress.com. That’s a limited hosting service and will not allow you to do all the things you might want to do.

I’ve heard the term "theme" used -- what is that?

Think of the theme as a framework or design that the site is built with, on the WordPress site. Some themes are free. Many of the best ones are not, although their costs are minimum. I don’t recommend that you shop themes.

What does WordPress cost?

WordPress is free! It’s open source software. Some plug-ins that enable special feature do cost a minimal amount. Sone themes cost money as well.

What if I’m just looking for a redesign?
